Fix dual boot with “Boot Repair”

I had an Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS (Ubuntu Linux) updates installed. On my single hard drive dual boot (Linux, Windows) PC setup.

And, now the option to load Windows from the list of installed operating systems is missing.

I had this occurrence several times and I’ve fixed it this way that many. And I’m quite confident in the procedure.

This time I’ll post here steps I need to do to get my system working as I’m doing it right now.

This year I did a long live stream session that included this procedure. And the video on demand of that live stream is covered in this post on this website:

Live stream show notes, and internet links to VOD

The situation

After reboot, as updates were finished in Pop!_OS. I’m able only to select the
Pop!_OS to load.

Now, I know from previous experience that my data on the system SSD is “healthy”, I’ve selected to run the Pop!_OS.

That way I can use the computer and get online, get the internet search done to fetch info on the issue.

Fixing it

So. Desktop is running and I have the “Ubuntu community help” website open on the page.

My first assumption is that the “Boot Repair” utility could be still installed. As I did this previously.

I’ll try just to invoke(run) it in terminal with command:

sudo boot-repair

I hit enter and?! Well, lucky me. “Boot Repair” comes up and I’m about to select option “Recommended repair”.. . I selected “No” at the end of procedure that reported “Boot successfully repaired. blah-blah, something something.. You can now reboot your computer.”

I might just try that now.

But, in case something unexpected happens. Here is the copy of the install instructions for situation when PC has no problem booting into at least Linux operating system.

2nd option : install Boot-Repair in Ubuntu

- either from an Ubuntu live-session (boot your computer on a Ubuntu live-USB then choose "Try Ubuntu") or from your installed Ubuntu session (if you can access it)

- connect to the Internet

- open a new Terminal, then type the following commands (press Enter after each line):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y boot-repair && boot-repair

I hit “System restart”

..aaAAND?! :

Great! The “GNU GRUB version 2.06” is showing now my Windooze os install. Lemme try that option…

And I get the MS WInX login screen.

THAT’S IT KIDS FOR THIS TIME.
